About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai‘i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full- time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. This position is a Full Time Temporary (casual hire) role.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, instructional design, psychology, social sciences, natural sciences, counseling, learning or cognitive sciences or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for advising or counseling; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of advising or counseling as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with advising or counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Adobe Acrobat, Google Suite and other commonly used software.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce work that is detail-oriented, accurate, neat, and organized and must be able to follow up on assigned tasks through satisfactory completion.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and implementation of student retention strategies, and tracking and evaluation of methodologies that support students’ academic success.
  • Designs and implements academic skill-building and resiliency sessions in areas that include productivity modeling, time management, critical reasoning and comprehension, test-taking strategies, professionalism, and student well-being.
  • Conducts, scores, and interprets formal learning assessments to examine students’ learning and study skills, learning preferences, baseline skills for mastery of information, and approaches to group learning and team building skills.
  • Utilizes student data and demographic profiles to create individualized educational plans, providing ongoing feedback and monitoring of student learners.
  • Creates comprehensive remediation plans that address student challenges and deficiencies to enhance student teaching across the institution.
  • Serves as a member of the AAMC Medical Education Learning Specialist (MELS) interest group, JABSOM Evaluation Review and Remediation Committees (ERRC) and JABSOM Pre-Clerkship Education Committee (PEC), and other pertinent committees.
  • Collaborates with the Offices of Medical Education and Student Affairs to provide lectures and small group teaching to learners regarding strategies to optimize their academic/clinical performance.
  • Serves as a liaison between all JABSOM students with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Kokua office, coordinating any accommodations for disabilities with appropriate faculty and staff as needed.
  • Assists in advising students with disabilities on applying for accommodations on USMLE exams.
  • Works collaboratively with the academic advisor or learning community mentor, as needed, to develop preparation plans for individual students.
  • Evaluating educational program success and effectiveness through formal evaluation methods.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and professional associations relevant to the area of expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.
