About The Position

Responsible for supporting instruction in various content area(s) and age/grade level(s). Supports learning experiences that motivate students and meet their individual needs. Works with teacher in utilizing instructional materials that support overall curricular goals. Integrates critical thinking skills and literacy into work with students. Utilizes approved classroom management strategies as needed. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred and/or earn at least 18 credits relevant to field within 2 years of hire.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
  • Must possess New Mexico Educational Assistant License and Substitute License with the New Mexico Public Education Department or be eligible to obtain one.
  • Maintains current licensure as required by New Mexico regulations.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and the general public.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn American Sign Language required.
  • Writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs.
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented.
  • Collects and aggregates data for program maintenance and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the specific instructional objectives of a learning experience/activity as outlined by the certified teacher.
  • Assist certified teacher with classroom and behavior management.
  • Provide individual academic/communication support as assigned by the teacher.
  • Provide tutoring services with certain students.
  • Escort students between classes, monitor children during recess, lunch, and other breaks.
  • Provide coverage for class or individual students in the absence of certified teacher by following substitute lesson plan.
  • Supports Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of each student.
  • Reviews and follows health plans and behavior plans for each student as necessary.
  • Drive students to off-campus locations for class activities and/or work experiences.
  • Assist on transportation runs.
  • Prepare materials for experiences/activities as assigned by the teacher.
  • Know and support emergency/lockdown procedures.
  • Attend required in-service training.
  • Support feeding, toileting, and mobility needs for specific students (could include physically transferring students in/out of wheelchair).
