About The Position

This employee is responsible for assisting special education teachers in lesson planning, delivery as well as classroom and playground supervision. The Educational Assistant must be physically present on campus according to their work schedule and abide by all school policies and procedures. They are responsible for maintaining confidentiality of student and family information and providing a standard of care appropriate for the maturity level of students under supervision. The role involves supporting student learning, assisting with clerical teacher duties, and providing safe and effective supervision of students in various settings. Additionally, the Educational Assistant may cover classes when a substitute teacher is not available, work with small groups, monitor and direct student activity in accordance with IEPs, and display a desire to work with students as individuals. They are also expected to maintain accurate records of student progress, be proactive in classroom management, and uphold the school's discipline policy. The position may also involve assisting in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments and providing specialized physical assistance to students with Individualized Education Plans or Section 504 Plans. Utilizing diverse techniques to maximize student outcomes, participating in meetings, professional development, and community events are also key aspects of the role. Additional functions include attending field trips, working collaboratively with staff, and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possess a current NMPED issued Educational Assistant License.
  • Current trainings in accordance with this Employee Handbook and GC Policy (e.g. Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.).
  • Current background check in compliance with school policy.
  • Be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.
  • Be able to stand for 30 consecutive minutes.
  • Be able to safely and effectively supervise groups of students in varied conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Be fluent in English and Spanish, if placed in bilingual assignment.
  • Be physically present on campus according to work schedule.
  • Abide by all NMIS school policies procedures, NMIS Employee Handbook, and relevant sections of New Mexico Statute (NMSA) and code (NMAC).
  • Enforce all NMIS student policies and community policies and directives found in Family Handbook.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Maintain a standard of care appropriate for the maturity level of students under supervision.
  • Support student learning in any way deemed appropriate by the teacher.
  • Assist with clerical teacher duties.
  • Display desire to work with students and responds to students as individuals.
  • Be proactive and diligent in classroom management strategies and uphold the discipline policy of NMIS.

Responsibilities

  • Participating regularly in grade level and staff meetings.
  • Participating in school-provided professional development sessions, as required.
  • Attending NMIS community events as directed by school administration.
  • Attending field trips with the classroom and assisting to keep children safe while off campus.
  • Working collaboratively with all staff members.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director.
