About The Position

The Education Specialist evaluates the educational levels and needs of residents at the Correctional Treatment Facility. This role involves administering diagnostic testing, developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to help residents pass GED tests or improve academic skills, and providing instruction through various methods including individual, small group, and large group settings. The specialist also designs lesson plans, assigns and evaluates student work, and maintains student records. In addition to educational duties, the role includes responsibilities related to correctional security, such as ensuring the safety of the unit and residents, transporting students, responding to backup calls that may involve physical restraint, attending case conferences, and potentially participating in facility shakedowns and mandatory training.

Requirements

  • Administering diagnostic testing for each resident.
  • Developing Individual Education Plans for each resident.
  • Teaching individually and in small and large groups.
  • Designing lesson plans.
  • Evaluating and correcting performance on class assignments and homework.
  • Maintaining files of student performance on Practice Tests.
  • Maintaining accurate transcripts for each student.
  • Maintaining and preparing progress reports and group notes.
  • Completing and signing GED Fee Waiver documents.
  • Enrolling students to take the Official GED test.
  • Familiarity with software programs used in classes: Aztec, Chalkwaves, and Distance Learning Lab.
  • Familiarity with texts used in the classroom: Steck-Vaughn, Contemporary, and New Readers Press.
  • Familiarity with Smart Board instructional media.
  • Providing correctional security.
  • Assuring safety and security of unit and residents.
  • Transporting students from dorm to learning lab and back.
  • Responding to officer(s) backup calls which may require physically restraining an individual.
  • Attending and participating in Interdisciplinary Treatment Team Case Conferences.
  • Attending mandatory staff meetings and training.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ABLE, DOLCH Sight Work List, CASAS, and the Diagnostic Pre and Post GED test.
  • Experience scheduling GED testing (Practice Tests).
  • Experience preparing students for official GED test.
  • Experience confirming students’ readiness for official GED test.
  • Experience placing residents at appropriate level of instruction (Chapter I/ABE classes, GED classes, Remediation classes).
  • Experience signing contractual agreements with students for short and long-term goals.
  • Experience providing a variety of instructional methods including individualization, large groups, small groups and/or team teaching.
  • May participate in shakedown of facility.
  • Making referrals to outside agencies that provide additional GED instruction.
