About The Position

Under the guidance of the assigned, assists the teacher and students with assigned cultural activities and implementation of cultural curriculum. Assists in implementing cultural activities, including but not limited to song, dance, regalia making, beadwork, drum making and weaving instruction designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups that may include at risk or special needs youth. Helps to gather and prepare cultural arts and educational materials for use in instruction and activities. Helps students to develop skills, including but not limited to beadwork, weaving, and dance specific to indigenous processes. Assists students in learning about indigenous processes including collection processes, procedures and practices. Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to motivate students and encourage achievement. Assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment. May perform routine clerical tasks as needed. Attends or participates in required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent
• One (1) year of experience performing Tribal cultural activities and application of indigenous processes
• At least six (6) months experience working with school age children
• Skilled in using necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools or software, including safe handling of scissors, needles, awls, chisels, saws, sewing machines and knives
• Skilled in working with students in a positive and confident manner
• Skilled in demonstrating techniques
• Skilled in reading, writing and oral communications
• Knowledge of cultural plants used in manufacture of native utilitarian items
• Knowledge of indigenous collection processes and practices
• Knowledge of history, stories, songs, and dances used by cultural groups
• Knowledge of design and constructions of cultural items
• Knowledge of preparation of raw materials
• Knowledge of Muckleshoot history, culture, and arts
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Ability to work with students in a positive and confident manner
• Ability to observe safe work practices
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships
• Ability to arrive to work in a timely manner
• Ability to attend required training
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to assist in preparation and implementation of relevant cultural activities and curriculum
