About The Position

This position will provide staff authority of Prison Programs services within a correctional facility. Programs include oversight of the Specialized Program for Juveniles and Young Adults Convicted as Adults (JYACAP), Career and Technical, Academic, and Cognitive Education, Library Services, Peer Education, and Faith and Citizens. The position will provide full staff and faculty supervision, oversee the delivery of services to students, and budget management. Provide oversight and accountability of educational goals and programmatic guidelines. Position exists to meet and uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). This position exists to encourage and promote self discipline, self motivation, safe and productive work habits and positive attitudes. This position may also supervise other facility work units at the discretion of the appointing authority and per the needs of the facility.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) years of professional work experience that includes two (2) years of education related experience in the areas of administration, counseling, library services or teaching.
  • Must possess at least one of the following credentials at the time of application (and must upload a copy of your credential to this application): Professional Colorado Department of Education (CDE) teaching license, Professional Career and Technical Education (CTE) license, Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABE), Colorado Community College System (CCCS) Credential.
  • Significant knowledge of effective teaching strategies, methods and techniques.
  • Must possess high level oral communication and writing skills.
  • Proven experience in policy analysis, development and implementation.
  • Creativity skills and the ability to develop or produce new concepts, techniques, or programs through imaginative or innovative skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and execute decisions.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations involving inmates (such as fights, fires or escapes).

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suites applications.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Performance Management Program (PMP), ensuring staff training and development.
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner.
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders.
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments.
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule.
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana.
  • A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass.
  • Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision over Prison Programs to include Education, Library Services, Faith and Citizens, JYACAP and Peer Led programming and Post-Secondary Education.
  • Implement comprehensive Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Academic education plans in accordance with Department policy.
  • Oversee incarcerated individual programming for Prison Program.
  • Implement new programming and evaluate current offerings.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the Prison Program staff through strong leadership, Performance Management, and mentoring.
  • Ensure instructors are teaching from approved curriculum and documenting student data and progress as required by Prison Programs.
  • Manage budget with fiscal integrity, ensuring good stewardship of money, maintaining programs, and supporting student and staff success.
  • Participate in facility management team and carry out responsibilities of a manager through duties to include staff supervision, policy review and revision, support of security, and promotion of offender and staff success through accountability.
  • Promote a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. This includes the supervision of staff who also supervise other staff and inmates.
  • Ensure completion of teacher induction program and positive progress of staff towards full credentialing.
  • Coordinate with credentialing officer for obtainment for credentialing and licensure for new instructors.
  • Manage the programs operating budget.
  • Ensure data tracking is accurate and complete.
  • Submit required numbers to Assistant Director that are accurate.
  • Participate in Prison Programs audits, curriculum review, and professional development.
  • In emergent situations, maintain safety and security by training inmates or perform inmate counts, searches, escorts, movement control, and inmate access to classrooms.
  • Through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline, promote a safe and secure work environment.
