About The Position

Farrar, Straus, Giroux (FSG) is seeking an editorial assistant with a broad range of interests and excellent communication and organizational skills. This role involves working closely with the Editor in Chief, supporting all aspects of running the editorial department, and publishing a range of fiction and nonfiction. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful and efficient reader with a passion for bringing contemporary literature and innovative ideas to a broad audience. They should be a curious self-starter who enjoys working independently as well as collaboratively. Key attributes include problem-solving, time management, devotion to follow-through, confidence in communication, attention to detail, and top-notch organizational skills. Proficiency in a second language is highly prized, and strong copywriting skills are essential. Enthusiasm, a can-do spirit, and fresh ideas are encouraged.

  • Seeing independent projects through from inception to completion.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work in publishing or related industry helpful, but not required.
  • Foreign language proficiency (primarily reading) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate workflow and administration on a high-volume, fast-paced editor’s desk.
  • Manage scheduling and assist the EIC with departmental administration.
  • Act as a liaison between editorial and production, design, marketing, publicity and sales departments.
  • Initiate and respond to correspondence with authors and agents at all stages of the publishing process.
  • Guide manuscripts through the production process.
  • Read and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts on submission.
  • Offer comments on manuscripts in progress.
  • Draft copy for jackets, catalog, presentations, and outreach to likely supporters.
