About The Position

The Editor is responsible for maintaining quality and brand editorial style on assigned work in a fast-paced agency environment with multiple competing deadlines. Creates, maintains, and socializes brand stylebooks; editorially reviews and fact-checks; and liaises with team members to achieve project goals. Guides teammates on editorial matters, including training to brand style and advising on rhetorical decorum and credibility. Ensures projects are free of copy-based and data-visualization errors. Is an advanced user of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Workfront Proof. Assists on editorial projects outside of assigned accounts as needed. Understands industry and agency culture and protects projects from commonplace threats to quality. Exemplifies excellence by adhering to best practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs), increasing personal expertise independently, and undergoing internal training. Completes assignments by deadline; communicates with team members proactively, effectively, and collegially. Records time accurately and adheres to company policies.

Requirements

  • Proofreading or editing experience required; must be computer literate.
  • Experience fact-checking annotations to ensure they accurately support claims and follow established style.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience proofreading and/or editing in a fast-paced pharmaceutical agency or similar environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Proficiency in internet and other secondary research tools; AMA style, Dorland’s, and PubMed preferred.
  • Familiarity with digital routing preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Can locate and identify errors in documents and files at a rigorous level; excellent eye for consistency; deep knowledge of the English language; is fluent in AMA style, with the ability to find answers to stylistic questions; is adept at secondary research; is comfortable working at the computer on complicated documents for long periods while maintaining focus and rigor.
  • Is an integral and proactive member of the team; can be counted on to think through project complications collegially and own editorial workstreams in an integrated manner; works with project managers when deadlines conflict to achieve efficiency and proper resourcing; can handle multiple deadlines while maintaining focus to execute individual projects with excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains brand style guide, socializing it to the rest of the team.
  • Creates brand style guide using established practices.
  • Updates brand style guide on an ongoing basis per client and regulatory feedback on projects.
  • Socializes style guide and solicits feedback from teammates.
  • Ensures deliverables adhere to style guide.
  • Reviews brand materials and other projects for correctness, factuality, sense, credibility, decorum, compliance, and style.
  • Checks files to ensure correctness, factuality, sense, credibility, decorum, compliance, and adherence to the brand style guide.
  • Demonstrates a mastery of different types of reviews (e.g., cold reads, word-for-words, check changes, fact checks) and understands when to employ various levels of editorial rigor.
  • Displays an understanding of promotional regulations, audience, purpose, and client goals and objectives.
  • Adheres to best practices and standard operating procedures.
  • Identifies efficiencies when editing and training colleagues.
  • Advises brand team, copywriters, and other colleagues on editorial topics.
  • Encourages colleagues to follow established SOPs, while remaining flexible to client and/or business needs.
  • Onboards new team members to the brand and USM practices and advocates adherence to it.
  • Understands spheres of authority and agency-of-record (AOR) team RACI.
  • Writes and speaks comprehensibly with colleagues and select client personnel.
  • Maintains a professional tone and helpful demeanor in internal—and if necessary, external—interactions.
  • Provides clear, actionable feedback during editorial reviews.
  • Deals with challenges proactively and positively; values suggestions and constructive feedback.
  • Uses official communication channels as intended: Outlook, Teams, Egnyte, Workfront, etc.
