Editor III (Neurology)
About The Position
The Department of Neurology is seeking an Editor III for the BIOS Division in the School of Medicine. The Editor III is responsible for translating complex scientific and technical information into clear, compelling content for a variety of audiences, including researchers, funding agencies, leadership, and the public. This role works closely with faculty, researchers, and stakeholders to develop high-quality grant proposals, manuscripts, reports, and communications materials that support research, funding, and strategic initiatives. The Editor III will oversee and ensure clarity and integrity of communications materials, including electronic newsletters, white papers, reports, website text content, marketing materials, and event materials. The Editor III will implement an editing process to support the communications and outreach mission of the University and its faculty. Plays a key role in the planning, execution, and improvement of integrated communications campaigns in support of university-wide goals. Will manage the overall communications and editorial calendar and work collaboratively with team members to execute the highest-quality work while upholding the Johns Hopkins University brand. Will have responsibility for significant or multiple external publications.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- Seven years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/ graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Nice To Haves
- Certification as a Medical Writer Certified (MWC) professional, or equivalent medical/scientific writing credential.
- BELS/ELS certification or other recognized scientific editing certification.
- Membership and active participation in professional organizations such as AMWA, EMWA, or the Council of Science Editors (CSE).
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education in medical writing, scientific communications, and publication standards.
Responsibilities
- Serve as advisor/consulting editor; provide backup editing support as needed.
- Coordinate with Development for strategic planning of content.
- Possess subject matter/industry knowledge to write own work and edit the work of others.
- Supervise staff, e.g., writers, editors and may direct the work of freelancers.
- Oversee all elements of production process: design, layout, photography.
- Serve as primary contact for project newsletter requests to assist with decision-making on feasibility, design, and implementation as approved by Director of Communications.
- Edit website text content and literature publications and special projects.
- Guide editing and revision, production, and support dissemination of communications products, e.g. policy reports, white papers, fact sheets, one-pagers, press releases/pitches, web content, donor capability statements, proposals, social posts, etc.
- Take the lead on implementing and updating writing and editing procedures for communication materials.
- Manage communications editorial calendar.
- Edit and advise on content, design, and dissemination of public relations and/or marketing materials.
- Consult on and edit conference and meeting materials.
- Edit event related materials.
- Assist with development and support of a team approach to communications activities and projects by participating in team meetings, encouraging coordinated approach to work, mentoring staff, and making suggestions for improvements and innovation.
- Lead the development, implementation, and assessment of communications strategies.
- Drive the ideation and execution of compelling content across print and digital publications to a variety of audiences.
- Monitor and update information based on the admissions cycle, including changes to deadlines, academic offerings, and scholarship opportunities.
- Act as liaison to agency partners to create publications and communications materials across traditional and digital platforms to promote the University.
- Serve as communication liaison with University Communications and other university departments to enhance and support communications efforts across the university.
- Report to leadership on communications campaign metrics to ensure desired impact, consistency of messaging, and effectiveness.
- Act as an expert on the university brand.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Developing the ability of BIOS CTCC teams to produce complex scientific and technical communications within the structure of BIOS CTCC activities, including consults, proposal development, trial operations, publication of primary scientific results, and dissemination of trial science.
- Overseeing the critical development of written and graphical communication skills among BIOS CTCC scientific teams.
- Capable of independent data acquisition and primary (i.e., initial) organization for mission-critical BIOS CTCC projects.
