The Emergency Department Technician plans and implements assigned patient care in collaboration with the Nursing staff in the department. The ED Technicians provides direct patient care for patients of all age groups and under a wide variety of circumstances, documents patient information.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or equivalent required.
• Must have a current LNA or EMT.
• Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
• Identifies each patients’ age specific needs and provide the care needed by the pediatric, adolescent, and/or geriatric patient group.
• BLS required.
• AVADE training required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Manages self and resources effectively
• Utilizes equipment and supplies appropriately
• Maintain clean, orderly environment of care
• Ensures traffic control in “sensitive areas”
• Requests assistance appropriately
• Communicates with patients, team members, and management in an accurate and timely manner
• Assures drug drawer on medication carts are secured at all times. Drawer locks are checked every shift. Applies temporary locks immediately after each use. Notifies pharmacy as needed for lock replacement. Documents security in a complete and thorough manner.
• Performs basic care to patients in the Emergency Department under the guidance of the nursing staff: Thermal applications. Non-sterile soaks. Applications of simple dressings. Bedside result testing. Obtains patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration and pulse. Reports findings to nursing staff. Provides personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, bed pans and transportation. Performs point of care testing, rapid strep, urine pregnancy test, urine dip and assures accurate reading and documents results in log book. Applies splints, dressing changes, bandages as ordered. EKG’s and orthostatic vitals
• Demonstrates the unit specific skills requisite for unit/patient population served
• Assures equipment checks and temperature logs are completed & recorded per shift, or per day, according to policy. Notifies manager of malfunctioning equipment and completes work orders for TSP/facilities as needed
• Transports patients to and from radiology department and/or to receiving unit for admitted patients.
• Covers the unit secretary position during lunch/break. Assures appropriate paperwork for admissions is complete
• Records, real time, times/procedures/medications during Code Blue as informed by the primary nurse and provider - to be recorded into the patient's medical record by the primary nurse.
