About The Position

Advocate Health is seeking an experienced ED Tech for a full-time position at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital's Emergency Department. This role involves performing patient care under the direction of nursing and medical staff, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available, assisting with customer service initiatives, and maintaining quality patient care standards. The position requires collaboration with peers, flexibility in supporting clerical functions, and transporting patients and supplies as needed. The ED Tech will work 36 hours per week, with a schedule of 6p-6a, including every third weekend and an annual holiday rotation. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of hospital patient care or pre-hospital patient care experience OR completion of 1 year of nursing school clinical rotations OR Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • Must have >1.5 yr ED experience.
  • Phlebotomy and splinting experience required.
  • High emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to use keyboard and see computer screen.
  • Ability to move/lift patients and push carts.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Completion of age-specific competency.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance (for patient lifts over 35 pounds, patient handling equipment and at least one other associate are expected to be used).

Nice To Haves

  • Level 1 Trauma Center experience preferred.
  • EMT-Ps licensed by IDPH may complete the housewide competency to start IVs, saline locks, and administer IV fluids.
  • Maintain competency in all ED Tech assignment patient care areas such as EKG, Triage, and other areas.
  • Perform point of care testing according to applicable policy and procedure.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of clerical functions such as telephone and basic order entry to assist with coverage of UIC when necessary.
  • Transports patients interdepartmentally, utilizing wheelchairs and carts when appropriate.
  • Transport blood products, medications, x-rays, and medical supplies as needed to facilitate patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff.
  • Assist nursing and physicians with various invasive procedures.
  • Perform bedside monitor application and lead placement, 12 lead EKGs, phlebotomy, orthopedic post molds and splints, crutch training, monitoring and discontinuation of urinary catheters, and assist patients with ADLs and toileting.
  • Document all interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist with the application of hard and soft restraints and monitor behavioral health patients.
  • Immediately report concerns regarding patient status to nursing and medical staff.
  • Ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available and maintained for patient care.
  • Continually assess levels of medical supplies and equipment, communicating needs for orders.
  • Ensure adequate levels of linen are available in all patient care areas.
  • Perform gross cleaning of used sterile instruments and transport them for cleaning.
  • Clean flexible scope and fiberoptic laryngoscope blades.
  • Monitor equipment function and report/remove malfunctions.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist nursing and medical staff to maintain high customer service performance.
  • Complete patient rounds on an hourly basis, managing patient expectations using AIDET.
  • Make rounds on patients in the ED waiting room.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care in accordance with ED quality initiatives.
  • Maintain annual competencies.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure adequate coverage in the ED.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of clerical functions to assist with coverage.
  • Communicate with ED Charge Nurse and fellow ED Techs.
  • Transport patients, supplies, and equipment interdepartmentally.
