About The Position

The ED Observation Unit Tech assists nursing and medical staff by performing selected procedures and tasks to support the care of Observation Unit patients. The role also includes Unit Secretary and Monitor Tech duties, combining clinical and clerical responsibilities. All duties must remain within the scope of the employee’s training and instruction and are performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The position is full-time, with 36 weekly hours on the third shift. The tech performs accurate clerical and unit-monitoring duties and provides patient care appropriate to the observation population while helping maintain a safe, organized care environment.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Recent experience in a healthcare setting providing patient care.
BCLS certification within the first 90 days of employment.
Complete hospital-based monitor tech training within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

Perform accurate clerical duties at the unit desk.
Serve as the unit’s monitor tech.
Answer phones using proper telephone etiquette; screen calls and appropriately forward requests and messages.
Log calls, answer call lights, and relay messages to appropriate nursing personnel.
Acknowledge and assist internal and external customers arriving at the nurses station.
Maintain accurate awareness of unit census and patient needs.
Assist with patient care, including EKGs, splint application, crutch training, and other assigned or identified care tasks.
Perform and document patient procedures in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Help organize patient care on the unit.
Clean and stock the department when time allows between patients.
Notify appropriate resources about broken, missing, or out-of-stock equipment.
Maintain a safe patient-care environment.
Obtain blood specimens via venipuncture and label specimens appropriately.
