About The Position

The Wilds is a leading conservation center offering diverse training programs for early career professionals. With nearly 10,000 acres of reclaimed mineland and remnant forest, it provides numerous opportunities for field research in habitat restoration and wildlife monitoring. The facilities include a Hellbender Conservation Center, an American Burying Beetle breeding center, and a Conservation Science Training Center with a population genetics laboratory. Restoration activities encompass prairie, wetland, stream, lake, forest, and forest understory management and research. Ecology Apprentices can specialize in either restoration or wildlife research, gaining hands-on experience and field training. There's a possibility to participate in projects outside their specific focus if time permits. Past apprentices have pursued careers in wildlife conservation, ecological research, and graduate programs.

Requirements

• Second Year College Student or recent graduate (2 years or less) in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Restoration, Wildlife Management, or related field.
• Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
• Strong time-management and organizational skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple learning activities effectively.
• Position requires hiking and some physically demanding tasks, including outdoor work throughout the seasons (hot, buggy, cold or otherwise challenging conditions).
• Able to lift and move up to 10lbs. constantly, 30lbs. frequently, and 50lbs. occasionally.
• Possession of a valid current state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
• Ability to provide reliable transportation to and from The Wilds.
• Apprentices may be asked to use their personal vehicle for travel between learning sites on property.
• Apprentices must follow organizational policies related to safety, conduct, and a drug-free workplace.
• Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check.

Responsibilities

• Conduct an independent scientific research project from an approved list.
• Communicate research findings to Wilds and Columbus Zoo employees at the end of the term.
• Participate in potential trainings including field methods (species identification, survey protocols, research methodology), laboratory methods (genetic techniques, microscope work), GPS & GIS applications/map making, biological monitoring and application of wildlife research techniques and/or land management and restoration techniques.
• Work on several learning activities or project components and receive guidance on how to prioritize them.
