About The Position

The Ecological Services Technologist provides environmental and ecological based expertise to the PPW section, other City Departments, and the public. Enforces regulatory compliance of invasive pests by communicating with public and private property owners to request action. Follows up to ensure action has been taken. Provides technical, planning, operational, project, and program support and development. Provides daily workflow support, supervision, and scheduling for Ecological Services Technicians and Parks Labourers. Works closely with the Ecological Services Coordinator on projects, metrics, collaboration and forecasting.

Requirements

  • Two-year diploma in biological or horticultural sciences, or equivalent.
  • Three years’ experience in related technical, planning and operational programs including collecting, compiling and assessing data.
  • Three years’ experience in enforcing Government legislation and acts related to weed and pest management.
  • Three years’ experience in participating in IPM programs including mosquito, weed, and pest control.
  • Standard First Aid course is required.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a valid Provincial Pesticide Applicator Certificate of Qualification for Biting Fly.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Proficient in GIS (Experience with Data Graphics Systems – DGS is an asset).
  • Proficient in general field monitoring, map interpretation, and laboratory techniques; general knowledge of survey procedures.
  • Ability to obtain other certificate classes (e.g. industrial, landscape, agriculture, exterior rodent control).
  • Knowledge of municipal policies, procedures, and bylaws.
  • Ability to organize, train, coordinate and supervise staff and equipment in the field and laboratory settings.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with employees and members of the public, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the media, public, volunteers and City employees.
  • Able to exert moderate to extensive physical effort occasionally; ability to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Ability to work independently or cooperate with colleagues as a team, with attention to deadlines and time frames.
  • Ability to follow all safety policies and procedures, particularly in high public-use areas and, at times, in an adversarial environment.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Operational leadership experience in both field and laboratory settings will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of construction and maintenance practices and principles would be an asset.
  • Familiar with Corporate Engineering development documents, such as Design Standards & Specifications.
  • Able to communicate changes in Parks practices for inclusion within these documents.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support ecological programs, including development of an Ecological Management System (EMS) and delivery of ecological monitoring, reporting, and natural asset management initiatives.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee GIS operations, data collection, analysis, and staff training to ensure accurate and effective ecological data management.
  • Manage and supervise field operations such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), wildlife coordination, naturalization projects, and ecological restoration initiatives.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision of staff, including work planning, performance support, training, and fostering collaboration and communication.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, health and safety standards, and organizational policies while managing program resources, budgets, and reporting requirements.
