About The Position

Fairview is seeking a casual ECMO Specialist to support our groundbreaking Mobile ECMO Program at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. This role involves 12-hour day, evening, or night shifts (or on-call) alongside a specialized team delivering advanced, life-saving care directly in the field. Be part of the world’s first emergency vehicle designed exclusively for cardiovascular emergencies, where patients are stabilized on-site using ECMO technology—supporting heart and lung function while critical care begins immediately. This position will provide specialized care to patients who require rapid extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation. Support the cannulating physician, manage the ECMO circuit, monitor patient status, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Responsibilities include sterile field management, knowledge and handling of cannulation equipment, set up and assessment of the circuit, patient resuscitation management, troubleshooting issues, and implementing interventions according to established protocols.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved Paramedic or Nursing program.
  • Current Minnesota State Certification as an EMT-Paramedic or Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Must hold either a Minnesota RN License or EMT-Paramedic Certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with an emergency advanced life support unit.
  • Strong knowledge of the medical and legal aspects of emergency care within the paramedic scope of practice.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems required.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, gross anatomy, and physiology.
  • BLS, ACLS, NRP, and Hazardous Materials training (or equivalent) required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Completion of Center for Resuscitation Medicine certification/training process upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and provide daily maintenance for the mobile ECMO vehicle
  • Moving and prepping the patient for cannulation
  • Administer IV medications and defibrillate at the request of the physician
  • Perform laboratory testing as instructed by the physician
  • Adjust and troubleshoot devices such as the LUCAS and Cardiohelp as needed
  • Manipulate the imaging equipment to provide the needed images for the team during cannulation
  • Manage the patient’s airway including endotracheal intubation and vent management as instructed by the physician
  • Identify and hand-off equipment needed by the sterile cannulation team
  • Demonstrate good organizational and communication skills with tact and poise in stressful situations
  • Demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills, knowledge, and judgment in an uncontrolled environment
  • Rapidly assess circumstances and communicate findings to the team
  • Follow instructions and prioritize actions in a rapidly changing and uncontrolled environment
  • Anticipate needs of the team and communicate potential problems to the team
  • Demonstrate a willingness to adapt to new ways of thinking about problems and treatment strategies
  • Provide any needed support to the team in the effort to cannulate and stabilize the patient
