About The Position

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a full-time Echocardiographer to join our Echo Lab team, providing care across inpatient units, procedural areas, and outpatient services at both the hospital and WAC diagnostic centers. This role offers a mix of inpatient and outpatient exams and locations, with opportunities for cross-training into additional modalities and advancement through the Echo clinical ladder. Standard shifts are 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM and/or 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with rotating weekend and holiday coverage. There are no scheduled evening or night shifts—only call-back coverage for emergencies, with on-call shifts from 3:00 PM – 6:30 AM or 3:30 PM – 7:00 AM. In this role, you’ll perform cardiac imaging procedures with a high level of independence, using critical thinking and technical expertise to identify and communicate significant findings.

Requirements

  • Completion of formal training in an accredited ultrasound program or professional equivalent required.
  • Completion of formal training in an Ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer OR Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) OR Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
  • Must obtain RDCS or RDMS within 12 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of cardiac ultrasound procedures, including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), stress echocardiography, and contrast/bubble studies in accordance with established protocols.
  • Produce high-quality diagnostic images using advanced ultrasound equipment, applying knowledge of scanning techniques, instrumentation, and cardiac anatomy.
  • Review physician orders, verify patient identification, and obtain/document relevant patient history to ensure accurate and safe imaging.
  • Prepare and educate patients by clearly explaining procedures, helping to ease concerns and ensure cooperation throughout the exam.
  • Recognize abnormal findings and critical pathologies, communicating important information promptly to physicians and care teams.
  • Assist physicians during invasive and procedural exams, adhering to safety and universal protocol standards.
  • Accurately document, code, and process completed exams, ensuring proper image storage and charge capture.
  • Collaborate effectively with cardiologists, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to support timely, efficient, and patient-centered care.
  • Maintain flexibility to cover multiple care areas and satellite locations, as well as on-call responsibilities, while functioning independently.
  • Support a positive team environment by demonstrating professionalism, respect, and strong communication with patients and colleagues.
