About The Position

This unique division within the Department of Transportation is seeking an ECD Full Authority Lateral Officer to join their team. The role focuses on maintaining the safety and compliance of Arizona's transportation network at its borders. The Enforcement and Compliance Division offers a range of roles, from customer support to dispatching and senior management. This specific position is under the general supervision of a Sergeant and focuses on public safety by protecting life, property, and the state transportation infrastructure. The officer will ensure the safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through Arizona, enforce all state and federal laws and regulations related to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance, complete work assignments and training, make sound decisions, make arrests when necessary, maintain professionalism, testify in court, prepare clear and concise written reports, exercise judgment in the use of force, and promote compliance with all state and federal laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to the position's duties. Individuals who have honorably served as a peace officer in Arizona with a lapsed certification, or served in another state or federal agency, may be eligible for Arizona POST certification through waiver testing. A Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is required, along with a background check. In-state and out-of-state travel is also required. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

Requirements

  • Have previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal agency, and meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer.
  • Completed the basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic course.
  • Obtain and maintain a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) certification.
  • Maintain required firearms certification.
  • Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification.
  • Weapons certified in accordance with AZ P.O.S.T. standards, Arizona Post Firearms Certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Responsibilities

  • Screen commercial driver/vehicle credentials
  • Weigh commercial vehicles
  • Perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections
  • Ensure registration compliance
  • Conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections
  • Conduct traffic stops on commercial vehicles
  • Enforce all pertinent laws, rules, and regulations
  • Issue applicable permits
  • Route over-dimensional loads
  • Collect appropriate fees and taxes
  • Take appropriate enforcement action as authorized by state and federal motor vehicle and operator laws, rules, and regulations
  • Inspect vehicles, dealer and salvage yard operations for compliance with State title and registration requirements
  • Protect life, property and the state transportation infrastructure
  • Provide safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona
  • Complete all work assignments and training in a timely manner
  • Make arrests when necessary
  • Testify in court when required
  • Prepare clear and concise written reports
  • Exercise judgment in determining use of force
  • Promote compliance of all state and federal laws, rules and regulations directly related to the duties of the position
