About The Position

The New School seeks a nurturing, reflective, and dynamic early childhood educator to serve as a Lead Teacher for our 8-week Summer Program. This educator will support children ages 1–5 in a joyful, play-based learning environment that prioritizes consistency, curiosity, and whole-child development. The Summer Program Lead Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom experience aligned with The New School’s commitment to excellence in early childhood education. This role requires a thoughtful educator who values relationships, fosters independence, and brings learning to life through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)
  • Ability to create engaging, hands-on learning experiences that support diverse learners
  • Skilled in fostering a positive classroom community and guiding young children’s behavior with patience and consistency
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust with families and colleagues
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to remain calm, flexible, and solution-oriented in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to maintaining professionalism and confidentiality
  • Comfort integrating music, movement, outdoor learning, and sensory experiences into the daily routine
  • Willingness to support a collaborative, team-oriented school culture
  • Previous experience working with children ages 1–5 in a school or childcare setting required
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start)

Nice To Haves

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and/or some college coursework in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences grounded in play-based and inquiry-driven practices
  • Design weekly lesson plans that reflect developmentally appropriate standards and support all domains of child development
  • Create a warm, structured classroom environment that promotes social-emotional growth, independence, and positive behavior
  • Use proactive classroom management strategies to guide behavior and support children in developing self-regulation skills
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with children, families, and colleagues
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with families regarding student experiences, growth, and needs
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment in accordance with licensing and school policies
  • Accurately document attendance, incidents, and student observations as required
  • Collaborate with teaching teams and leadership to ensure consistency and quality across the summer program
  • Uphold confidentiality and professionalism at all times
  • Support daily routines, transitions, and care needs appropriate for young children
  • Participate in ongoing reflection and remain informed on best practices in early childhood education
