About The Position

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Early Childhood Recreation Unit is seeking caring, engaging, and reliable Part-time Early Childhood Recreation Assistants to support the Stay and Play toddler program. In this role, you will plan and lead engaging art, sensory, music, movement, and storytelling activities for children ages 1–3 in a community center-based program where parents and caregivers remain with their children throughout the class. This position may require travel to and work at various program sites throughout Arlington County.

Requirements

  • High school/equivalent
  • Considerable experience administering recreational programs; including some experience leading or supervising recreational programs.
  • Good character and integrity
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate with parents and children
  • Effective and efficient program management skills
  • Ability to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
  • Possess First Aid, CPR, and AED Certifications or obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening
  • Complete 16 hours of Early Childhood related training a year
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment background check, including providing references
  • Wear a uniform
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift
  • Provide personal care as needed for participants
  • Have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits
  • Work at various Early Childhood program locations across Arlington County
  • Possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid Driver License, or have the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at other Arlington locations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience/certification in one or more of the following: Willingness or experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with parent groups or community organizations, including working with a culturally diverse population
  • Working knowledge of Arlington County and Virginia Department of Social Services State licensing regulations
  • CPR, First Aid, AED Certifications and/or Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential

Responsibilities

  • Supervising, directing and actively participating in daily activities at the assigned center
  • Planning, organizing, and implementing daily developmentally appropriate activities
  • Enforcing federal, state, and local policies, procedures, rules, and administrative regulations
  • Attending monthly planning and staff meetings
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned
