About The Position

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Assistant is accountable for assisting in the successful operations of the Little Chiefs Day Care program according to the organization’s vision, objectives, and strategic direction of WLFN. This position is responsible for assisting the efficient operations of the day care and is an advocate for early childhood education in the community. Early Childhood Assistant will report to the Early Childhood Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Valid Early Childhood Education Assistant certificate or diploma OR Responsible Adult Course.
  • One to Three years early childhood education.
  • Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and experiences.
  • Knowledge of First Nations language and culture.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at an intermediate/advanced level.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, very good judgment, and strong initiative.
  • Ability to multi-task, to identify priorities, be creative and maintain a detailed work plan.
  • Ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and efficiency.
  • Operates as part of a team and is flexible about the boundaries and functions of the job.
  • Maintains professionalism in all circumstances.
  • Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Indigenous culture.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the organization of activities for children which encourages participants to take the initiative to learn so that they can carry these behaviors forward with enthusiasm and promote positive self-esteem.
  • Assists with planning and delivering student curriculum including arts and craft, cultural education, language, free play, and cultural education including Shuswap culture and language.
  • Uses teaching techniques that include modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
  • Helps to ensure nutritious meals and snacks are provided; keeps facilities, equipment, and toys clean.
  • Provides encouragement, extra help, and support to aid students in their daily routines.
  • Encourages a safe and healthy environment for on-site and off-site activities.
  • Administers first aid if required with valid first aid certificate, observes, and removes potential hazards; reports all incidents of child abuse to the supervisor.
  • Provides positive behavior redirection, if necessary, without labelling the child.
  • Follows licensing requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned or required by ECE supervisor or ECE staff.
  • Be able to engage in outdoor light physical activity for minimum 1-3 hours per day, in all weather conditions.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  • Contributes to the WLFN’s ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.
  • All staff are expected to be team oriented and maintain confidentiality of all information gained while working with the organization.
