This role supports the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating activities that promote children's development, implements age-appropriate programs, and supervises children in play-based learning. It also involves preparing, portioning, and serving meals and snacks in compliance with dietary guidelines and food safety standards, maintaining a clean kitchen environment, and adhering to public health regulations. The position requires building positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues, maintaining a safe and hygienic classroom and kitchen environment, and completing daily logs and records. The role reports to the Childcare Center Supervisor and involves minor material responsibilities.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older (Canada Summer Job age requirement: between the ages of 18-30 years of age)
  • Excellent Oral & written communication skills required to work with children, parents and other staff
  • Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed
  • Updated Medical completed
  • Standard First Aid & Level C CPR
  • Complete all on-line Salvation Army courses
  • Valid Food Handler Certification in compliance with local health regulations.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.
  • Knowledge of child development and best practices in early childhood education.
  • Understanding of food safety, dietary requirements, and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for children.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
  • Review of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required processed within 6 months of hire.
  • Clearance through internal Salvation Army child abuse registry.
  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training and online health and safety trainings must be completed immediately upon hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Support the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating appropriate activities that promote children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of age-appropriate programs.
  • Supervise and engage children in play-based learning activities.
  • Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Foster positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.

  • Prepare, portion, and serve meals and snacks in compliance with dietary guidelines and food safety standards.
  • Maintain proper food storage and handling practices to prevent contamination.
  • Ensure kitchen and food preparation areas are kept clean, sanitized, and organized.
  • Monitor children during mealtimes, ensuring a safe and positive dining experience.
  • Adhere to all public health and sanitation regulations, including allergen awareness and safe food handling, meal preparation and kitchen procedures.
  • Adhere to all requirements set out by Public Health and CCEYA.
  • Develop and maintain a safe environment.
  • Check for physical hazards and report hazards to the RECE, Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor.
  • Maintain and implement safety standards and protocols.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Operate and maintain facilities.
  • Maintain equipment, materials and furnishings.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.

  • Collaborate with parents to identify strengths, needs and interests of the child.
  • Complete child’s daily log on CRAFTS for parents and daily program log/record in classroom daily/weekly/monthly.
  • Attendance at parent meetings, staff meetings and other job-related activities which may be after hours.
