About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking an Early Childhood Assistant to support the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating the development and behavior of children. This role involves supporting the implementation and evaluation of age-appropriate programs, using observation and documentation techniques, and fostering the cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of children. The assistant will build meaningful relationships with children, identify and expand upon learning opportunities, and support individual learning and development, while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position also requires meeting health, welfare, and safety needs, implementing preventative health and safety measures, following safe travelling and off-site practices, and adhering to safe toileting and diapering procedures. Providing first-aid/CPR, protecting children from harm, implementing emergency plans, and identifying/reporting suspected child abuse are also key responsibilities. The role involves promoting a healthy lifestyle, supervising children, meeting nutritional needs, and establishing a positive behavior environment through guidance and active listening. Adherence to local Public Health and CCEYA Act requirements is mandatory. The assistant will also be responsible for developing and maintaining a safe environment, checking for hazards, maintaining safety standards, using developmentally appropriate equipment, and monitoring the cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children. Building relationships with families, orienting them to the program, providing resources, advocating for children and families, and collaborating with parents are also important aspects of the role. Record keeping includes completing daily logs and attending meetings, which may be after hours. The position reports directly to the Childcare Center Supervisor and has no direct reports. There are minor material responsibilities related to toys and equipment, and no financial transaction processing.

Requirements

18 years of age or older (Canada Summer Job age requirement: between the ages of 18-30 years of age).
Excellent Oral & written communication skills required to work with children, parents and other staff.
Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed.
Updated Medical completed.
Standard First Aid & Level C CPR.
Complete all on-line Salvation Army courses.
One year of related experience.
Knowledge and experience in implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.
Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
Review of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required processed within 6 months of hire.
Clearance through internal Salvation Army child abuse registry.
The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training and online health and safety trainings must be completed immediately upon hiring.

Responsibilities

Support the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating the development and behavior of children.

Complete children's daily logs on CRAFTS for parents and daily program log/record in classroom daily/weekly/monthly.
Attendance at parent meetings, staff meetings and other job-related activities which may be after hours.
Fulfill all other related duties as assigned.
