About The Position

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is offering an exciting opportunity for an Early Career Geotechnical Engineer eager to build real-world experience on large, high-impact heavy civil and infrastructure real estate/building development, and energy projects. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic environments and is passionate about hands-on fieldwork. You’ll travel to various locations across the United States, working on diverse project sites and playing a key role in supporting construction efforts. While the position is based in our Norwood, Massachusetts office (with flexibility to align with other GZA locations), much of your time will be spent in the field—gaining invaluable, boots-on-the-ground experience. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, including in marine environments, and brings a strong foundation in geotechnical engineering principles. Requirements

  • BS degree in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering and 2+ years of relevant professional work experience (Master’s degree with Geotechnical concentration may substitute for up to 2 years).
  • Strong academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering; including advanced soil mechanics, deep foundations, shallow foundations, slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining wall design, earth retention, settlement of compressible soils, and ground improvement techniques.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) required; intent to obtain PE when eligible.
  • Effective communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills resulting in exceptional rapport with people.
  • Attention to detail with excellent analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting.
  • Ability to travel regionally to project work sites for assignments and the physical ability to work in wide-ranging environmental conditions. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing and have personal automobile.
  • Ability to understand design drawings and relate them to construction activities.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and weekends as required to meet construction schedule of clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Desire to obtain Master’s degree while working if not yet obtained.
  • Experience with observing and/or testing deep foundations and heavy civil/marine construction a plus.
  • Experience with software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, gINT, BoreDM, SupportIT, DeepEX, GRLWEAP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, LPILE, GROUP, and Settle3D.

Responsibilities

  • Role within next several months will be to support GZA’s large infrastructure projects on work sites. Depending on project will require ability to travel weekly to site with option to come home on weekends or stay near project work site. Role also includes long-term career growth and opportunity within GZA’s geotechnical practice.
  • Performing field construction observation during installation of shallow and deep foundation installation and testing, and other tasks related to construction for compliance with plans and specifications and code.
  • Executing subsurface exploration and in-situ testing programs to evaluate soil and bedrock conditions in connection with foundation design & construction projects.
  • Evaluating field data and performing engineering analyses/calculations, such as slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, axial/lateral pile analyses, and evaluation of earth support.
  • Writing field summary reports, drafts of field and engineering reports, technical specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Assisting with submittal reviews and requests for information during construction
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Support GZA’s “One Company” approach by assisting with tasks outside primary responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform work safely. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
