About The Position

We’re looking for a DWDM Optical Network Engineer to be a key part of a highly visible and business-critical technology team at Viasat. This is a site-based role, employees work 3+ days (60%+) per week from a Viasat office or work location within a standard five-day workweek. The day-to-day involves working on the design and architecture of the company’s core network infrastructure to support our expanding global satellite fleet. You will also work on layer 1 through layer 3 network design, capacity planning and platform management as well as the design of routes for fiber-based networks including point to point, ring, and path diverse routing.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
• 5 years relevant work experience with multi-vendor network equipment to architect complex DWDM systems.
• Hands-on experience with test equipment (BER Test, Optical Power Meter, OTDR, etc.).
• Knowledge of Coherent technology to build long-haul networks.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with use of fiber network design, planning and mapping software tools such as Nokia, Adtran, (Infinera, Adva) 3-GIS, ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS.
• Coding and debugging in Java, Python, Golang, or other modern programming languages.
• Experience with continuous integration & delivery and DevOps methodologies.
• Operational experience working with major carriers.
• An understanding of outside plant construction requirements with fiber experience preferred.
• IP and Ethernet networking experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and architecture of the company’s core network infrastructure to support our expanding global satellite fleet.

• Creating written network implementation design plans (e.g. Method-of-Procedures MOPs).
• Troubleshooting system issues.
• Automating networks components and network management systems.
