About The Position

This externship program is designed to provide veterinary students with practical experience in a contemporary small animal practice. The program aims to contribute to your practice-readiness and help you transition smoothly into practice after graduation. Externships can range from two to eight weeks, typically lasting two or three weeks, and are flexible according to college curricula. The schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends. Externs will practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision, participating in all aspects of patient care.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT).
  • Ensure coverage is current and submit a certificate of coverage with the application.

Nice To Haves

  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
  • Be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required.

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice

Benefits

  • A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
