About The Position

The Duty Crew Firefighter serves to promote fire education and prevention throughout the community as well as to provide fire suppression and emergency rescue services as needed. This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact: Participates in department and squad work details. Makes known to the department’s training division and squad officer any problems at the earliest possible stage. Attends all department-training sessions and drills designated as mandatory by the department’s training division. Participates in prevention activities and safety education. Responds immediately to emergency calls under the close supervision of officers and senior firefighters. Performs tasks as directed by an officer on the emergency scene. While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma (or G.E.D. equivalent) is required.
  • Prior successful completion of Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, and Hazardous Materials Operations are all required.
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is required.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license (and have excellent driving record).
  • Work involves frequent calls to emergency situations.
  • There is regular exposure to very disagreeable working conditions such as fumes, fire, smoke, extreme weather conditions including ice, snow, extreme high and low temperatures, humidity, rain, dirt, mud.
  • The work involves exposure to hazardous conditions such as toxic chemicals, slippery conditions, working in traffic areas and adverse road conditions.
  • While at emergency scenes, Duty Crew Firefighter may have exposure to injury, trauma, blood-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, and visual and emotional trauma.
  • Duty Crew Firefighter is required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective equipment which may include a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Duty Crew Firefighters must be able to stand, climb ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach, walk or run on uneven surfaces and to drag up to 200 pounds for a distance of 50 feet.
  • There is hearing/listening, seeing/observing, communication, grasping and occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular moving of objects up to 20 to 40 pounds.
  • Moderate attention to detail and deadlines is required in completing reports and paperwork.
  • Working 24-hour shifts may be required, where sleep is frequently disrupted.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment.
  • Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, work history verification, education and training verification, physical ability test, pre-employment physical exam, driver’s license check (must have valid driver’s license and excellent driving record) and a psychological evaluation.
  • Successfully pass FAO (Fire Apparatus Operator) class and requirements within the first four years on the Eden Prairie Fire Department.
  • After the initial training, Duty Crew Firefighters must meet department training requirements for training sessions on Thursday for the duration of firefighter career.
  • These training sessions typically occur from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM or 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
  • After successfully completing the required training, Duty Crew Firefighters must work a minimum of 36 duty crew shift hours per month or 108 duty crew shift hours per quarter.
  • Shifts are scheduled for the upcoming month and are based upon seniority.
  • Typical available shifts occur on weekdays from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM, 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM, 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM, or 12:30 PM – 5:00PM.
  • Available weekend shifts are 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM and 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
  • These minimum hour requirements may be adjusted.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is preferred.
  • State Certified FAO is preferred.
  • Blue Card Certification is preferred.
