About The Position

City Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization and a fast-paced, high-performing nonprofit dedicated to helping feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. During our more than 40 years serving New Yorkers in need, we have rescued more than one billion pounds of fresh, nutritious food and delivered it free of charge to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets across the five boroughs. This year, we will rescue and distribute more than 100 million pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need. City Harvest works alongside our community partners to boost community capacity, expand nutrition education, and strengthen local food systems. Since our founding in 1982, City Harvest has always been there to feed our city one day, one meal, and one New Yorker at a time while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and excellence to maximize our impact across New York City.

Requirements

• Enrolled in grad school OR 2–4 years' experience
• Involvement with grassroots and/or electoral campaigns
• Giving in-person and virtual presentations on community-facing topics
• Making phone calls or conducting outreach to government offices
• Working on newsletters
• Volunteering or participating in food pantry programs
• Understanding of the power of policy and advocacy
• Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with and communicate with New Yorkers of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
• Presentation skills
• Comfort with compiling data
• Microsoft Office suite
• A sense for what resonates with social media users and the public

Responsibilities

• Manage the City Harvest advocacy volunteer program: lead in-person volunteer shifts at Mobile Markets, train Volunteer Advocacy Leaders, develop campaign materials, lead virtual advocacy trainings, and report on program outcomes.
• Support advocacy campaign goals by preparing materials, engaging stakeholders, following up to schedule meetings, recruiting participants for City Hall rallies, and assisting with lobby day logistics in Albany and Washington, D.C.
• Draft City Harvest advocacy communications, including newsletters and social media content.
• Support internal reporting on City Harvest advocacy activities.
• Support survey data collection and assessment.
• Provide backup support and notetaking at webinars and coalition functions, as needed.
• Research and compile data on the impact of City Harvest's policy priorities to support the development of policy briefs.
• Phonebank: call elected officials and follow scripted talking points to advance policy priorities.
