About The Position

Attends to the personal care of adults with developmental disabilities living in a licensed residential home. Assists and participates in the planning, coordination and delivery of daily living activities; including outings, to facilitate development of living skills for the residents and help them achieve a higher level of independence. Schedules and attends residents’ medical appointments and assists with the auditing of medications. Supports the Residential Administrator in the onboarding of new Direct Service Associates (DSAs) and with the ongoing training and development of new and existing DSAs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or national equivalent.
  • DSP-I and DSP-II Certification required.
  • Must possess and maintain valid CPR, CPI and First Aid Certifications.
  • 2 to 4 years’ experience, or equivalent combination of training, education and experience to perform the job successfully.
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a licensed Residential Home with medically fragile adults with developmental and/or behavioral issues.
  • Familiarity with charting, medication administration, and positive behavior support.
  • Working knowledge of behavioral issues, including aggressive, non-verbal and self-injury behaviors.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Individual Program Plans and Individual Service Plans.
  • Working knowledge of Regional Center, Department of Developmental Services, Title 17 and 22.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing; ability to interpret and carry out written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate good judgment and decision-making skills; ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality pertaining to the work environment.
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor settings, arrange and participate in outdoor activities with residents of the residential home.
  • Ability to provide assistance with personal care to residents and to transfer an individual who has no weight bearing skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to push/pull wheelchairs on a variety of terrain.
  • Ability to pass post-offer medical examination and test for tuberculosis.
  • Ability to travel locally with vehicle appropriate for the transportation of residents, if required by the program; possess and maintain driving record in compliance with Transportation Safety Standards, proper auto insurance and vehicle registration.
  • Proof of valid California driver’s license.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a criminal record/fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation per Easter Seals Southern California and/or program requirements.
  • Ability to provide proof of required vaccinations or positive titer showing immunity. A signed declination may be acceptable for certain vaccinations.
  • Must pass all required drug testing by ESSC.

Responsibilities

  • Provides personal care for residents which may include assistance with eating, personal hygiene, showering, restroom assistance, and preparing for bedtime.
  • Assists and/or prepares meals in compliance with dietary restrictions; assists individuals to eat, including those who may require assistance with G-tube feeding.
  • Audits Medication Administration Records (MARS) and Medication.
  • Assists in the administration and monitoring of medications.
  • Assists with development of activity calendar and conducts weekly outings.
  • Conducts daily activities to assist in the development of living skills, consistent with the residents’ Individual Program Plan (IPP) and Individual Support Plan (ISP) goals.
  • Assists with scheduling and attending medical visits; transports individuals to health care appointments and other various locations; provides scanned medical visit notes to administrator and RN.
  • Assists with the training and onboarding of new DSP hires.
  • Assists with keeping personnel files up to date and in compliance.
  • Assists with monthly all-staff training and attends all necessary meetings.
  • Meets required training hours timely.
  • Conducts regular inspections of facility; completes facility checklist.
  • Assists with ensuring participants’ items (e.g. Hoyer lift, wheelchairs) are kept in proper working order.
  • Schedules van maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Ensures adequate stock of individual and home supplies; assists with shopping for groceries, general house supplies, and P&I (Personal and Incidentals); follows up with contracted vendors/suppliers as needed.
  • Assists with tracking consultant hours and updating consultant logs.
  • Assists with keeping program and medical files up to date and in compliance.
  • Completes all necessary reports and documentation on a daily basis.
  • Assists in care and cleaning of residential home, which includes laundering & ironing of residents’ clothing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
