About The Position

As a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 2 with the Department of Corrections, you become part of a team dedicated to guiding meaningful rehabilitation. This role allows you to lead structured treatment programs that encourage growth and positive decision making. This role at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy focuses on providing counseling, treatment support, and structured programming to individuals working to overcome substance use challenges. You will guide group sessions, maintain accurate records, and coordinate resources that support rehabilitation.

Requirements

  • One year of para-professional and one year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and certification by the PA Chemical Abuse Certification Board as a "Certified Addictions Counselor"
  • One year of experience as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and a bachelor's degree that includes 18 credits in the behavioral sciences
  • One year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting and a master's degree with major coursework in addictions science, psychology or social work
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Lead therapeutic community and outpatient treatment groups using established curricula
  • Maintain detailed case histories and treatment plans for assigned individuals
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions in line with policies and procedures
  • Complete assessments and make informed recommendations based on departmental guidelines
  • Oversee voluntary recovery meetings and manage related enrollment and attendance
  • Provide guidance to new staff and participate in required training to maintain skills
