About The Position

Join the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Laurel Highlands as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 1 and change lives through recovery. This position focuses on providing beginning-level professional counseling and support for inmates working through substance-related challenges. You will assist with treatment planning, group facilitation, assessments, and record maintenance.

Requirements

  • One year of para-professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and certification by the PA Chemical Abuse Certification Board as a "Certified Addictions Counselor"
  • One year of experience as a Corrections Counselor or Social Worker
  • One year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting and a bachelor's degree that includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences
  • A master's degree with major course work in addictions science, psychology or social work
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing individualized plans and providing supervised counseling sessions
  • Lead therapeutic groups and community meetings according to assigned guidelines
  • Maintain accurate treatment records and summaries in compliance with policies and regulations
  • Conduct assessments with supervisory guidance to help determine needed services
  • Join interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss inmate progress and needs
  • Complete required training to strengthen counseling and safety skills
