About The Position

The Low Voltage Cable Technician (Managed Wi-Fi / FTTU / In-Building Networks) is responsible for installing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining structured cabling and network infrastructure in multi-unit residential buildings, commercial spaces, and mixed-use properties. This role also supervises a field team to ensure quality workmanship, safety compliance, and on-time delivery of high-performance connectivity solutions.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in low-voltage cabling installation (fiber optics and Ethernet/structured cabling).
  • Hands-on experience deploying managed Wi-Fi solutions (enterprise access points/controllers or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in Fiber to the Unit (FTTU) installation and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of networking hardware and fundamentals including VLANs, PoE, and IP networking.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and floor plans.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Experience using test tools such as OTDRs, power meters, and cable certifiers.
  • Strong commitment to safety, compliance, and quality workmanship.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to supervise a team in the field.
  • Structured cabling: fiber/copper termination, labeling, pathway buildout, IDF/MDF organization.
  • Fiber expertise: splicing, OTDR testing, power measurements, troubleshooting/repair.
  • Managed Wi-Fi deployment: AP placement/installation, equipment staging, validation, performance triage.
  • Networking fundamentals: VLANs, PoE budgeting, IP networking concepts, switch/router basics.
  • Testing & certification: cable certifiers, OTDR, power meter use; interpreting test results.
  • Troubleshooting: methodical diagnosis across physical layer and networking layers.
  • Leadership: task coordination, coaching, quality checks, and safety enforcement.
  • Documentation: as-built markups, inventory logs, test result packages, work summaries.
  • Customer & stakeholder communication: professional onsite presence and clear status reporting.
  • Time management: prioritization in multi-site/project environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with in-building network technologies such as DAS and related structured cabling systems.
  • Industry certifications such as: BICSI Installer/Technician, RCDD, or equivalent
  • Fiber certifications (e.g., FOA, Corning, Fluke)
  • OSHA 10/30 or equivalent safety training
  • Experience working in multi-unit residential properties, mixed-use properties, data centers, or active construction environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform low-voltage and network infrastructure installations for managed Wi-Fi and FTTU environments.
  • Supervise field technicians and coordinate onsite work to ensure safe, efficient, code-compliant execution.
  • Install, terminate, label, and test fiber, Cat5e/Cat6, and coax cabling in multi-unit and commercial spaces.
  • Configure, mount, and validate network equipment including access points, switches, routers, ONTs, and patch panels.
  • Troubleshoot cabling faults and network performance issues (Wi-Fi, fiber, Ethernet) to restore reliable connectivity.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation (as-builts, test results, inventory, closeout packages).
  • Install and terminate low-voltage cabling (fiber optics, Cat5e/Cat6, coaxial) for managed Wi-Fi and in-building networks.
  • Deploy and configure equipment such as access points, switches, routers, ONTs, and patch panels.
  • Establish fiber optic links, including splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Build and maintain cable pathways using conduit, raceways, and cable trays in compliance with safety and building codes.
  • Label, dress, and secure cabling to meet structured cabling best practices and client requirements.
  • Test and certify installed cabling to meet performance standards using tools such as OTDRs and cable certifiers.
  • Troubleshoot managed Wi-Fi systems, fiber networks, and Ethernet connectivity issues.
  • Identify root causes of network performance issues (signal, configuration, cabling faults, PoE, VLAN-related issues) and implement corrective actions.
  • Validate commissioning results and ensure systems meet expected performance targets.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and property stakeholders to plan and execute installations.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and floor plans to select optimal routes, device placement, and build strategies.
  • Document work performed, including as-built drawings, test results, and inventory logs.
  • Support project closeout by ensuring documentation accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to keep networks operating at peak performance.
  • Replace or repair damaged cables, connectors, patching, and hardware.
  • Recommend improvements and assist with expansion or refresh initiatives for in-building networks.
