About The Position

The Driver provides safe, reliable, and professional transportation services for shelter residents, staff, and program-related activities. The Driver transports families to medical appointments, housing viewings, government offices, and other essential destinations, and may also be responsible for facility supply runs, food pickups, and other operational transportation needs. Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) operates family shelters providing safe, supportive, and dignified transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness. Our shelter programs are guided by a trauma-informed, strengths-based philosophy and offer a comprehensive continuum of services—including case management, housing placement, recreation, and supportive programming—to help families achieve stability and permanent housing as quickly as possible. All shelter staff are expected to uphold BCS's commitment to equity, cultural humility, and client-centered care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid NYS driver's license with a clean driving record required.
  • Minimum of two years of professional driving experience.
  • Safe and defensive driving skills.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to assist clients with diverse needs.
  • Basic record-keeping skills.
  • Must be able to pass a DMV background check and BCS vehicle use authorization process.
  • Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check in accordance with applicable law, including NYC Fair Chance Act requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience transporting clients in a social services or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish or another language spoken in the community served) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Transport shelter residents safely to and from medical appointments, housing viewings, DHS offices, schools, and other destinations as authorized.
  • Ensure client safety and comfort during transport; assist residents with boarding and exiting the vehicle, including those with mobility limitations or young children.
  • Maintain a respectful, professional, and trauma-informed approach in all interactions with clients.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, BCS transportation policies, and vehicle safety protocols.
  • Conduct facility supply runs, food bank pickups, donation deliveries, and other program-related transportation as directed.
  • Support program events, community outings, and off-site activities requiring transportation.
  • Coordinate transportation schedules with program staff and supervisors.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Keep assigned vehicles clean, fueled, and in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain accurate trip logs, mileage records, and transportation documentation in accordance with BCS policies.
  • Comply with all DOT regulations and BCS vehicle use policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
