About The Position

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. The purpose of this position is to collect and dispose of solid waste within the City. Essential Functions: Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business. Drives or operates all equipment at the Solid Waste Department, including, but not limited to, an auto side loader, rear loader, a one man or a two man knuckle boom truck and trailer, a wheeled loader at the mulch site, or a forklift, or any other truck within the Solid Waste Department and acts as driver or operator for a yard waste on assigned routes under a variety of weather conditions. New employees start out on the back of a trash truck, then move to a two-man trash truck and then a two-man boom, a one-man boom or an automatic side loader. Working on the back of a garbage collection truck where work involves heavy lifting and exposure to fumes, chemicals and other noxious odors, and noise. Fills out daily paperwork including Vehicle Condition Report (VCR). Safely drives or operates either a one-person or two-person knuckle boom loader on assigned routes collecting yard waste under a variety of weather conditions. Performs routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections on assigned vehicle. Assesses safe operating conditions, especially if any overhead lines are present: electric power lines, telephone lines, and cable lines. Must be aware of any possible traffic or other unsafe conditions that may be present. Assists Driver by walking to piles of waste; uses pitchfork or rake to assist in final clean up at collection locations as necessary. Assists Laborers by helping lift heavy objects and cleaning areas of scattered trash. Safely operates a wheeled front-end loader located at the mulch site or a forklift located at the Solid Waste Department. Drives and/or operates a specific truck on assigned daily routes from both the left- and right-hand driving positions. Operates controls on the inside of the cab with the left hand to operate the outside lift arm. Washes and maintains assigned vehicle’s cleanliness, ensures vehicle is properly fueled. Operates a two-way radio for communication between the Solid Waste Department and truck assigned using proper FCC protocol. Repairs damaged garbage cans and delivers new cans to new residents. Performs other work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate with others in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to perform occasional overtime, holiday, and weekend work as needed.
  • Ability to safely drive all the trucks and equipment used in the Department.
  • Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
