About The Position

J.P. Mascaro & Sons is a growing, family-owned solid waste company seeking reliable and dependable Sanitation Workers/Driver's Helpers for their Berks County Division in Reading, PA. This role is crucial to the success of the solid waste collection team. The position involves riding on the back of a trash truck and assisting the driver in safely collecting curbside waste and/or recycling in a safe and efficient manner. Certain medical conditions, such as seizure disorders and specific sleep disorders like Narcolepsy, may preclude individuals from safely performing this role. Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
Valid, active Driver's License required
Ability to lift 75 pounds
Ability to work outside in all types of weather
Requires constant lifting, walking, and climbing onto and off of truck
Must be able to ride on the rear step of the truck while in motion

Responsibilities

Partner with the driver to safely navigate the truck, especially during backing maneuvers, using proper hand signals and staying within the driver's vision.
Collect curbside waste and/or recycling safely and efficiently, returning containers to their original locations.
Clean up any spilled or dropped debris.
Maintain polite and professional interactions with customers, referring questions or concerns to the route supervisor.
Operate packer controls to compact debris after receiving proper training.
Ride on the rear corner step of the truck between pick-up points, using the grab handle and keeping body close to the truck. Ride only short distances on the step; for distances over 2/10th of a mile, ride in the cab.
Assist the driver with pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any equipment problems.
Assist the driver in keeping the vehicle clean and presentable.
