About The Position

Solid Waste Services of West Virginia, Inc. is a locally owned and operated private family-owned company that has been experiencing record growth and success. In 1964, it started with one truck, and has grown into one of the largest, most successful fully integrated solid waste companies serving the mid-Atlantic area. The Solid Waste Services of West Virginia Inc. Wright Sanitation Division, located in Colliers, WV is looking for reliable and dependable Sanitation Workers/Driver's Helpers who play a critical role on the solid waste collection team to support ongoing success in a family-like environment. The position requires you to ride on the back of a trash truck and perform several essential roles, such as assisting the driver to safely navigate the truck and collect curbside waste and/or recycling in a safe and efficient manner. Please note the following disabilities or medical conditions preclude you from being able to perform safely in this role: Seizure disorder(s) and Certain Sleep Disorders, such as Narcolepsy. Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid, active Driver's License required
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Requires constant lifting, walking and climbing onto and off of truck.
  • Must be able to ride on the rear step of the truck while in motion

Responsibilities

  • Show up for work on time with all proper personal protective equipment and ready to go.
  • Partner with the driver to safely navigate the truck, especially in backing.
  • Utilizes proper hand signals to clearly communicate to the driver when backing and stays in the driver’s vision at all times.
  • Helper will not ride on the truck step while backing.
  • Collect curbside waste and/or recycling in a safe and efficient manner, placing containers back in their original location.
  • Ensure any spilled or dropped debris is properly cleaned up.
  • Ensure that any contact with customers is polite and professional.
  • Refer all customer questions/concerns to their route supervisor as soon as practical.
  • After receiving proper training, operates the packer controls to compact debris in the truck.
  • When riding between pick up points, ride on the rear corner step only, utilizing the grab handle and keeping feet and body close to the truck body.
  • Ride only short distances on the step (any distance over 2/10th of a mile, the helper will ride in the cab).
  • Assist the driver with pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and notify driver of any equipment problems.
  • Assist the driver with ensuring the vehicle is kept clean and in a presentable condition at all times, in accordance with company standards.
