About The Position

The Driver Manager is responsible for overseeing a team of approximately 30-50 drivers, focusing on safety, operational performance, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, and economic performance. This role involves managing driver schedules, absenteeism, performance evaluations, and fostering a positive and safe work environment. The Driver Manager also plays a key role in managing the union relationship and ensuring compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Management of frontline employees with accountability for safety and performance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent training and experience.
  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of transit operations.
  • Knowledge of driver scheduling practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations regarding transit operations.
  • Knowledge of vehicle operations and safety.
  • Knowledge of principles of training and development.
  • Must currently hold or obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License with P endorsement.
  • Work well as part of a team.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer-focused with the ability to inspire your team with commitment and enthusiasm.
  • Exercise good judgment and creativity in decision-making.
  • Interact professionally with all levels of KTA employees, client representatives, and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for driver group safety performance, ensuring adherence to safety policies and fostering a just culture.
  • Improve safety by identifying and acting upon opportunities for individual driver retraining and displaying exemplary safety-oriented behaviors.
  • Manage absenteeism in the group and address unplanned absenteeism issues.
  • Review event video as part of incident and performance investigations.
  • Conduct field supervision of driver group members to assess performance and competence.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and prepare/deliver regular driver scorecard results.
  • Lead a customer-oriented culture where all drivers ‘think like a passenger’ and contribute to the overall customer experience.
  • Assist in the investigation of and response to customer comments.
  • Build positive relationships with drivers, leading an engaging culture where individuals can work to their full potential.
  • Create a positive, collaborative, team-oriented environment for the driver group.
  • Provide regular one-on-one coaching to improve safety, performance, engagement, and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide regular driver recognition and feedback.
  • Work with applicable KTA resources to recruit, interview, onboard, train, and retain qualified drivers.
  • Understand and monitor compliance to the ratified CBA and manage union relationships productively.
  • Handle union grievance responses and address driver performance issues with coaching and/or disciplinary action.
  • Ensure communication of KTA instructions and directives to drivers.
  • Act as a liaison between drivers and other departments to resolve concerns.
  • Drive improvement in the employee experience through improvements in KPIs like driver turnover and absenteeism.
  • Manage planned and unplanned absenteeism to keep related expenses at or below budgeted levels.
  • Manage recruiting and training expenses by limiting driver turnover.
  • Contribute to the overall improvement of the location’s financial performance sustainably.
