About The Position

This is a full-time position with the Department of Public Safety - Driver Licensing, located at the Sioux Falls Driver Exam Station. The hours for this position will be 40 hours a week. This job may require travel to other locations, potentially including overnight stays. As a Driver License Examiner, you will have substantial contact with the public, often under stressful conditions, and are expected to maintain a professional and courteous demeanor at all times. The role involves working with a diverse group of people and situations and handling sensitive materials.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma is preferred.
  • Knowledge of South Dakota driver's manual requirements pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of computers.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to read and understand complex information and explain that information in common terms.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate information relating to state laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to administer examinations.
  • Ability to establish applicant identity and eligibility for ID card, permit, or driver license.
  • Ability to issue ID cards and licenses to qualified citizens.
  • Ability to multi-task diverse and complex activities.
  • Ability to maintain train of thought despite frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to objectively grade an applicant's driving ability.
  • Ability to conduct assigned duties in a uniform and standardized manner.
  • Ability to operate computers, cameras, printers, and license processing equipment.
  • Selected candidate is required to have a valid driver's license.
  • Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
  • All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.
  • The State of South Dakota as an employer will be using E-Verify to complete employment eligibility verification upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Process license and identification card applications.
  • Compute and accept license and identification card fees.
  • Issue receipts and maintain records of transactions.
  • Administer eye examinations, written exams, and drive/skills tests.
  • Enter and exit vehicles used in testing.
  • Direct applicants through road test routes and evaluate driving performance.
  • Inform applicants about their performance on tests and place appropriate restrictions on licenses.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public and other agencies via direct contact, telephone, and mail.
  • Fill in and verify data on license and identification card application forms.
  • Enter information.
  • Compile and tabulate data.
  • Verify accuracy of computations and entries.
  • Count and balance cash, credit card, and check payments against program totals, correcting for errors.
  • Travel to other exam station locations and be away from home 1 or more days in a week.
  • Lift and carry approximately 50 lbs in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs.
