About The Position

This role blends customer service and public safety, supporting the mission of the Iowa Department of Transportation. The position involves a variety of tasks, both in the office and on the roadway, with rotating duties. The specialist will focus on efficient time management and ensuring customer satisfaction by issuing driver’s licenses and identification documents, administering and scoring driving examinations, applying expert understanding of driver eligibility and licensing rules, reviewing state and federal records, completing vision and hearing screenings, capturing customer photos and signatures, and serving as a primary point of contact for customer questions and inquiries.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted, except for corrective lenses, driver's license (minimum of an operator's license).
  • Must pass federal and local name-based and fingerprint criminal history background checks.
  • Must attend, obtain, and maintain required American Association of Motor Vehicle Administration certifications, a Motorcycle Rider Education Safety course, and department training sessions as required.
  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent), and experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely-related work.
  • A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described above), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Driver & Identification Service Center Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Issuing driver’s licenses and identification documents with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Administering and scoring driving examinations, including motorcycle, car, truck, passenger, and CDL pre-trip, skills, and road tests.
  • Applying expert understanding of driver eligibility, licensing rules, and REAL ID requirements to verify identity and determine qualification.
  • Reviewing state and federal records to determine issuance and non-issuance decisions accurately.
  • Completing vision and hearing screenings to ensure applicants meet safety standards.
  • Capturing customer photos and signatures for official credentials.
  • Serving as a primary point of contact for customer questions and inquiries, delivering excellent service with every interaction.
