Drilling Fluids Specialist

SLB•New Iberia, LA

About The Position

The Drilling Fluids Specialist designs and maintains drilling fluid programs suited to well objectives, formation challenges, and operational constraints. The role monitors fluid properties and performance, performs and interprets laboratory testing and field measurements, troubleshoots drilling-fluid-related issues, and recommends and follows through on treatments. It also coordinates additives and treatment plans, works with rig and office stakeholders to support execution, maintains operational and cost documentation, supports HSE compliance, and drives improvement through post-well reviews, KPI tracking, and structured problem-solving.

Requirements

  • Technical degree or diploma in Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, or a related discipline, or equivalent field experience in drilling fluids or mud engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in drilling fluids engineering or mud engineering, on land or offshore.
  • Working knowledge of drilling hydraulics, ECD management, solids control, and wellbore stability fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret laboratory results and translate them into actionable field treatments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain drilling fluid programs, including WBM, OBM, and SBM as applicable, tailored to well objectives, formation challenges, and operational constraints.
  • Monitor and control fluid properties—including rheology, density, filtration, oil/water ratio, alkalinity, chlorides, and solids control performance—to keep them within program limits.
  • Conduct and interpret laboratory testing and field measurements, ensuring samples, test methods, and reporting meet quality expectations.
  • Troubleshoot fluid-related drilling issues, including stuck pipe, losses, wellbore instability, contamination, dilution, solids management challenges, and ECD management; provide clear recommendations and follow through.
  • Coordinate chemical and additive usage and treatment plans, optimizing consumption while maintaining performance and cost effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with rig and office stakeholders, including drilling contractors, operator representatives, solids control, and cementing or completions teams as needed, to align execution and manage changes.
  • Maintain accurate daily mud reports, inventories, cost tracking, and records of deviations and lessons learned.
  • Support HSE compliance through safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of mud products and waste streams, and reinforce safe work practices on location.
  • Drive continuous improvement through post-well reviews, KPI tracking, and structured problem-solving to improve performance and reliability.
