About The Position

The Driller is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of the drilling rig and crew during their assigned tour. Reporting directly to the Rig Manager, the Driller provides leadership and direction to the rig crew, coordinates daily drilling activities, operates and supervises drilling and hoisting equipment, and ensures all work is performed in accordance with company policies, client requirements, safe work procedures, and applicable regulatory standards. The Driller oversees all drilling operations from the rig floor and driller's console, continuously monitoring drilling parameters, well conditions, and equipment performance through the rig's instrumentation and control systems. By assessing changing operating conditions and making timely operational adjustments, the Driller maintains well control, protects personnel and equipment, minimizes operational downtime, and ensures drilling activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with industry best practices. In addition to operational responsibilities, the Driller is accountable for supervising, mentoring, and developing crew members, promoting a strong safety culture, maintaining effective communication with the Rig Manager and Well Site Supervisor, and ensuring accurate operational and safety documentation is completed throughout the tour.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Floorhand, Motorhand, and Derrickhand.
  • Progressive drilling rig experience demonstrating competency in all rig positions and drilling operations.
  • Experience leading crews in a safety-sensitive environment.
  • Strong understanding of drilling operations, equipment, and well control principles.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of Stampede Drilling's policies, procedures, safe work practices, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Take full responsibility for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of the drilling rig and crew during the assigned tour.
  • Ensure all crew members, subcontractors, and service personnel perform their work in accordance with company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), manufacturer guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, enforcing the use of appropriate controls, and exercising Stop Work Authority whenever unsafe conditions or acts are identified.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of the top drive, drawworks, iron roughneck, pipe handling equipment, mud pumps, and all other drilling equipment from the driller's console while maintaining constant awareness of well conditions and equipment status.
  • Continuously monitor drilling parameters, gauges, instrumentation, and mud system performance to identify abnormal conditions such as washouts, lost circulation, kicks, equipment failures, or other well control concerns. Take immediate corrective action and notify the Well Site Supervisor and Rig Manager as required.
  • Maintain proper drilling fluid circulation and work with the Derrickhand and crew to ensure mud properties remain within required operating parameters.
  • Monitor drill bit performance and signs of failure, making recommendations to the Well Site Supervisor and Rig Manager when a bit change or corrective action is required.
  • Assist with or supervise special drilling operations, including logging, coring, testing, fishing, and other downhole services while coordinating with service company personnel.
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and train crew members to safely perform their duties while developing their knowledge, skills, and competency.
  • Assign work based on each employee's training, experience, competency, and demonstrated ability. Ensure workers are only assigned tasks they are qualified and competent to perform safely.
  • Observe crew performance, provide coaching and corrective feedback, encourage teamwork, and promote a respectful, productive work environment.
  • Conduct a complete inspection of the rig and worksite at the beginning of each shift, identifying and correcting deficiencies, hazards, or abnormal operating conditions.
  • Ensure all safety devices, including crown savers, guards, emergency stops, lockout/tagout systems, and other protective equipment, are functional, properly adjusted, and used at all times.
  • Ensure drawworks controls remain attended whenever the hoisting drum is in motion. Never engage the rotary system without confirming the area is clear, and never leave the brake lever unsecured while equipment is operating.
  • Ensure lockout/tagout procedures are followed whenever equipment is isolated for maintenance or repair.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Well Site Supervisor, Rig Manager, Assistant Driller, and crew to ensure all operational information, equipment status, well conditions, hazards, and instructions are communicated clearly during shift handovers.
  • Conduct thorough tour change handovers to ensure continuity of operations and the transfer of all critical information.
  • Ensure all required documentation is completed accurately, legibly, and on time, including but not limited to: Tour Reports, Daily Drilling Reports, Rig Inspections, Safety Meeting Records, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Work Permits, Job Observations and Interventions, Hazard Identifications and Near Miss Reports, Incident Investigations, Equipment Inspection Reports, Motor Logbooks, New Hire Orientations.
  • Conduct and document emergency response drills in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Review all company safety bulletins, operational memos, alerts, and procedural changes with the crew to ensure understanding and compliance.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping throughout the rig by assigning responsibilities and verifying tasks are completed.
  • Monitor rig equipment for mechanical issues, coordinate repairs, and ensure spare parts inventory is maintained to minimize operational downtime.
  • Maintain discipline and professionalism on location, including company camps, by addressing inappropriate behaviour promptly and fairly in accordance with company policies.
  • Participate in the company's progressive discipline process when required, including coaching, verbal warnings, written warnings, suspension, demotion, or dismissal. Serious violations that endanger personnel, equipment, the environment, or the public may result in immediate disciplinary action.
  • Make sound operational and safety decisions in situations not specifically addressed by company policy while always acting in the best interests of personnel safety, environmental protection, equipment integrity, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead by example by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, integrity, and a commitment to continuous improvement in all aspects of drilling operations.
