About The Position

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is committed to the ethical treatment of humans and animals in research. DPIRD has Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) that oversee the care and use of research and teaching animals, ensuring compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and relevant legislation. The AECs assess the justification of animal use, balance potential effects on animal wellbeing against potential benefits, and support animal wellbeing through the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). This vacancy is for a Category C (welfare) member on the DPIRD Orange AEC, which oversees DRNSW paddock-based and wildlife research. A Category C member is defined as a person with a demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering animal welfare, who is not employed by or associated with the institution, and not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Requirements

  • A commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals.
  • Active membership of a recognised animal welfare organisation with endorsement.
  • Not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution (DRNSW).
  • Not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
  • Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category.

Responsibilities

  • Provide recommendations of an independent nature.
  • Attend AEC meetings (8 per year).
  • Review Animal Ethics submissions and documentation prior to AEC meetings.
  • Participate in animal facility inspections.
