About The Position

The City of Guelph is seeking a part-time Downtown Maintainer to perform a variety of duties related to the maintenance and cleanliness of city-owned parking facilities, pedestrian areas, and sidewalks within the Central Business District. This role involves both manual and motorized tasks, including snow removal, sanding/salting, sweeping, and general upkeep of public spaces and equipment. The successful candidate will contribute to the City's Strategic Plan and Corporate Values, aiming for an inclusive, connected, and prosperous city.

Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • 6-12 months of experience operating medium to heavy equipment (e.g., trackless units, mobile sweepers, mobile vacuum units, pick-up trucks with snowplow and spreader attachments, high-pressure power wash units) in high-density pedestrian and vehicular traffic areas.
  • Experience in maintenance work related to physical Right of Way infrastructure, parking facility, and parking equipment maintenance.
  • Valid Class G driver’s licence with a good driving record.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and understanding of tools, equipment, and procedures for infrastructure, facility, and equipment preventative maintenance (e.g., parking meters, plumbing, electrical, drywall, elevators, fire panels, minor concrete/asphalt/paving stone repairs).
  • Must be a reliable self-starter, able to make decisions and function with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and undertake all aspects of the job thoroughly and willingly.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Neat appearance and ability to deal with the public professionally and cordially.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and repetitive physical work, including climbing, lifting, bending, pushing, and moving heavy items in all weather conditions.
  • Experience working with computer applications including Windows, Microsoft Office, MMS systems, and WAM.
  • Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between duties.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Nice To Haves

  • A DZ driver’s licence would be an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual and motorized snow removal, sanding/salting, and sweeping at parking facilities, pedestrian areas, and sidewalks.
  • Maintain cleanliness of city waste containers in the downtown core.
  • Assist in maintaining daily records of maintenance activities.
  • Report breakdowns, vandalism, and deterioration of facilities and city-owned property to the Lead Hand.
  • Operate various maintenance equipment, including tractors, skid steers, front-end loaders, and snowplows, safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain equipment in safe, clean, and tidy condition, performing daily checks and minor repairs.
  • Remove or flag obstacles hazardous to employees or the public.
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and The Highway Traffic Act.
  • Respond to emergency accidents, clean-ups, and spills, following environmental protection protocols.
  • Assist other team members in daily activities.
  • Provide housekeeping for parking facilities and downtown infrastructure, including benches, bike racks, and garbage cans.
  • Work with City MMS system work orders, WAM work requests, and other software.
  • Perform power washing and assist with the manufacture, construction, erection/removal, and maintenance of traffic control and parking devices.
  • Keep the Central Business District and work areas clean and presentable.
  • Demonstrate initiative to resolve issues with a focus on quality customer service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
