About The Position

This part-time internship position within the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in the transportation industry, specifically within the Brevard Operations Unit. The intern will perform routine tasks under direct supervision, work across several functional areas, and actively participate in team projects. The FDOT is committed to improving safety, enhancing mobility, and inspiring innovation in the Florida transportation system. This role is part of the Other Personnel Services (OPS) program and is for the Fall 2026 Semester (August to December).

Requirements

• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide identification supporting citizenship or authority to work for the duration of program participation.
• Participants are required to comply with all statutes and rules and the Department’s policies, procedures, regulations, and Code of Ethics.
• Basic engineering principles and concepts.
• Introductory knowledge of roadway design, drainage, or construction processes.
• Familiarity with Florida Administrative Code or FDOT standards.
• Use of Personal Computer (PC) and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Organization, time management, and task prioritization.
• Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
• Communicate effectively with others and follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Nice To Haves

• Students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Students with an academic status of Junior or above.

Responsibilities

• Assess proposed driveway connections in accordance with the Florida Administrative Code and FDOT standards and criteria.
• Review and assess proposed drainage connections in compliance with applicable Florida Administrative Code requirements and FDOT standards.
• Review driveway, drainage, and utility permits.
• Review Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans.
• Learn how to process permits and perform field reviews with permit coordinators.
• Assist construction project managers on various construction-related projects.
• Assist with and review monthly estimates for construction projects.
• Generate monthly reports using Microsoft Office and departmental database programs.
