About The Position

The Domestic Violence Advocate provides trauma-informed direct services, crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive advocacy to survivors of Domestic Violence (DV), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Sexual Assault (SA), Stalking, and Teen Dating Violence, and their dependents. The Advocate’s primary goal is to empower survivors by connecting them with essential resources, helping them navigate complex systems (legal, housing, medical), and supporting their journey toward safety and self-sufficiency. This role requires empathy, strong boundary setting, cultural responsiveness, and adherence to strict confidentiality protocols.

Requirements

Minimum high school diploma, HSED or GED required.
Experience with a variety of office equipment, including various computer software, required.
Practice clear, concise communication and foster an environment of open, supportive discussion and problem-solving.
Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision.
Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle, and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment.
Must be eligible to be put on the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.
Ability to assess a situation and intervene appropriately and effectively according to crisis intervention models for domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse and neglect.
Mentoring, advocacy, and facilitation skills are essential.
Ability to read, interpret, understand, and communicate client-support documents, such as safety plans, procedures, regulations, and requirements, including the ability to explain said documents to clients in ways they can understand.
Must communicate clearly in both verbal and written formats.
Awareness of the impact of trauma in individuals and communities.
Understanding of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs, and traditions of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the needs of families and the community within the program service area.
Adherence to the fundamental values of the human services profession including respecting the dignity and welfare of all people; promoting self-determination; honoring cultural diversity; advocating for social justice; and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness, and objectivity.
High proficiency with technology applications, such as Excel, Word, SharePoint, MS 365, and other MS Office programs.
Ability and openness to learn new computer applications.
Good organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously is required, as well as being able to solve complex practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.

Nice To Haves

Experience in domestic violence, sexual assault advocacy, or human services is preferred, but comprehensive training will be provided to the selected applicant.

Responsibilities

Provide immediate crisis intervention via a 24/7 hotline and in-person response for survivors seeking support, shelter, or immediate safety.
Conduct comprehensive intake, lethality assessment, and immediate safety planning with all clients, focusing on survivor-defined goals and needs.
Offer emotional support and non-judgmental validation to survivors, fostering a respectful and empowering advocate-client relationship.
Provide intensive case management, collaborating with clients to develop comprehensive service plans addressing housing, employment, healthcare, and childcare.
Accompany survivors to court hearings (e.g., Orders of Protection, family court) and appointments with law enforcement, without providing legal advice.
Assist survivors in understanding legal processes and completing necessary paperwork.
Assist survivors in applying for emergency housing, transitional housing, and local housing assistance programs; advocate on their behalf with landlords and housing agencies.
Maintain and update a comprehensive list of community resources and make appropriate referrals (e.g., mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, job training).
Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed client case files, logs, and documentation in accordance with program policy, funder requirements, and best practice standards.
Collect and track service statistics for program evaluation and grant reporting purposes.
Strictly adhere to tribal, state, and federal laws regarding client confidentiality ensuring all client information is handled with the highest level of discretion.
Participate in community coalitions, task forces, and collaborative meetings (e.g., law enforcement, child welfare, wraparound care) to promote survivor-centered responses and advocate for policy change.
Attend all required professional development training related to domestic violence, sexual assault, trauma-informed care, and cultural responsiveness.
Conduct community presentations and outreach, as directed, to increase awareness of domestic violence dynamics and available resources.
