About The Position

As a Petco Certified Dog Trainer, you will support Petco’s mission as a Pet Health and Wellness company by strengthening the bond between pet parents and their dogs. You will use modern dog-training techniques and positive reinforcement to help pet parents develop well-behaved, happy, and healthy dogs. The role includes one-on-one training sessions, group classes, and advice on basic training, environmental management, and customized plans for specific goals. You will also engage with guests to offer personalized solutions, including recommendations for pet health and wellness, nutrition, services, and supplies. The role has two core responsibilities: providing dog-training services and offering 360-degree solutions to Petco guests. Training includes completing Petco’s six-week Dog Trainer Instructor Program, recommending and selling appropriate classes and supplies, keeping accurate training records, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism, collaborating with grooming and veterinary teams, and completing ongoing learning. Guest-service duties include recommending merchandise and services, supporting digital and OMNI shopping experiences, maintaining merchandise displays, following operational guidelines, and contributing to a safe and collaborative Pet Care Center. Certification is structured in stages: complete the six-week, instructor-led Dog Training Apprentice program; successfully run and grow the dog-training business in a Pet Care Center with Petco marketing and business resources; and complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog. Candidates with prior experience who pass skill and knowledge assessments may qualify for accelerated training. No supervisory responsibilities are assigned.

Requirements

Pass Petco’s six-week Dog Trainer Instructor Program, including assigned learning modules and workbook materials, unless eligible for accelerated training after passing skill and knowledge assessments.
Passion for animal care, training, and welfare, and genuine interest in improving the lives of pets and pet parents.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with pet parents and provide clear instructions, demonstrations, and applicable selling techniques.
Demonstrated ability to safely and humanely handle and work with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities.
Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed to accommodate training schedules and store operations.
Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds of dog-training equipment and supplies.
Familiarity with computer systems and software for managing training records, schedules, and communication with pet parents.
Complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.

Responsibilities

Attend and successfully pass Petco’s six-week Dog Trainer Instructor Program led by a Petco Certified Dog Trainer Mentor/Academy Instructor.
Complete assigned Workday Learning modules and Dog Training Instructor Program Student Workbook materials according to the program roadmap.
Recommend and sell suitable dog-training classes, training, and supplies to support successful training experiences.
Keep accurate records of training sessions, progress, and pet-parent feedback.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Work cross-functionally with grooming and veterinary teams to provide holistic whole-health solutions.
Complete and apply ongoing training to maintain expertise in the role.
Provide an outstanding guest experience by engaging guests and recommending merchandise and services based on their needs.
Generate future business by understanding guests and their pets and connecting them to Petco’s digital platforms.
Demonstrate awareness and knowledge of animal health, welfare, and proper handling.
Perform related duties that support Pet Care Center performance goals.
Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed to enhance the shopping experience.
Complete cash-register transactions and support guests with OMNI shopping as needed.
Follow established operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.
Promote teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
Use Petco selling behaviors to identify and address guest needs.
Follow safety protocols to help maintain a safe environment for partners, guests, and pets.
Participate in developmental programs that support continued career growth.
Successfully run and grow the dog-training business in a Pet Care Center after completing the apprentice stage.
Complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.
Evaluate guest inquiries and refer them to the Leader on Duty as needed.
