About The Position

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is looking to hire a Weigh Station Technician at the Dumfries Motor Carrier Service Center (MCSC)! This position is only open to current DMV employees. The Lead Station Technician (LST) ensures the enforcement of commercial vehicle size and weight regulations on Virginia’s highways, contributing to the safety of motorists and protection of infrastructure. This role exists to monitor weigh station operations, issue citations for violations, ensure compliance with state and federal laws, and coordinate with law enforcement personnel. The LST is responsible for the maintenance of equipment to ensure the proper operational standards are upheld and support DMV's mission of safeguarding lives and securing identities. Requirements

  • Basic Knowledge of Virginia's Motor Carrier Size, Weight, and Equipment Regulations and related state and federal laws applicable to commercial vehicle operations.
  • Knowledge of fuel sampling techniques, including detecting dyed fuel for tax evasion, and maintaining chain-of-custody.
  • Proficient in data analysis, identifying operational gaps, and developing solutions for compliance and efficiency improvements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for engaging with staff, stakeholders, and customers, with the ability to explain complex regulations.
  • Skilled in using technical systems like IRIS, Microsoft Office, and DMV databases for operations, reporting, and tracking.
  • High attention to detail in inspections, financial transactions, and report generation to ensure compliance.
  • Ability to conduct outdoor inspections and utilizing sensory skills for safety and compliance checks.
  • Understanding of the Motor Carrier Size and Weight Manual, DMV policies, and procedures like Liquidated Damages, Hauling Permits, IFTA, IRP, and others.
  • Knowledge of truck weighing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and direct diverse administrative functions, overseeing station operations and aligning resources to organizational goals.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply complex material, such as Motor Vehicle Code and Commercial Vehicle Operations, ensuring compliance.
  • Ability to handle expenditures and Station activities, ensuring financial and operational efficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the ability to interpret and apply financial data in budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles, particularly handling complex DMV transactions like license reinstatements and citations.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures for operating weigh stations and identifying unsafe working conditions.
  • Experience interpreting and enforcing the Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Regulations (FMCSR)
  • Experience in developing and streamlining compliance policies and procedures to ensure alignment with state and federal regulations.
  • Experience in managing teams, operations, and budgets alongside a strong understanding of state and federal laws governing commercial vehicles.
