About The Position

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist to join our Highway Safety Office. This position plays a critical role in supporting highway safety initiatives through the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of crash, demographic, and other transportation-related data. The Data Scientist is responsible for preparing and delivering highway safety information, statistical analyses, and data-driven insights that support the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of highway safety programs. The incumbent will develop reports, dashboards, publications, and presentations that inform decision-making by internal stakeholders, external partners, and executive leadership.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and within a diverse team setting with minimal supervision in a fast-paced analytical and technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of the latest data collection techniques, statistical methods and procedures; statistical formulas; graphic arrangements using statistical and software applications.
  • Ability to research, collect, and organize statistical data; to analyze and make interpretations of statistical data
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Ability to respond to on-demand and emerging requests and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret complex and diverse information and effectively present factual conclusions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, graphically and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Perform statistical, predictive, and exploratory analyses of crash data and other highway safety-related information.
  • Develop and maintain interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI and other visualization tools.
  • Clean, transform, and analyze large datasets using Python and/or R.
  • Design and execute SQL queries to extract, validate, and analyze data from multiple sources.
  • Conduct geospatial analysis and mapping using GIS software and tools.
  • Prepare data visualizations, technical reports, executive summaries, and publication-ready materials.
  • Lead or support special projects related to highway safety research, program evaluation, and performance measurement.
  • Respond to requests for data, analyses, and information from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Present findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences through written reports, presentations, and visual storytelling.
