About The Position

This is a 2-year assignment with the New York State DMV, serving as the first point of contact for customers entering the local DMV offices. The role is fast-paced, people-facing, and involves directing customers, screening paperwork, managing customer flow, grading vision tests, assisting at self-service kiosks, taking photos, proctoring exams, and maintaining customer information confidentiality. The position offers a path to direct state employment for top performers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional, courteous demeanor, even when things get busy.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable learning new computer systems, kiosks, and office equipment.
  • Ability to stay calm and professional with customers who may be frustrated.
  • Comfortable standing, walking, and staying on your feet for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work at different DMV locations as assigned.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check (fingerprinting via NYS DOL and DMV).

Nice To Haves

  • Customer service, administrative, receptionist, government, or retail experience.
  • Prior government or public-sector experience.
  • DMV or motor vehicle-related customer service background.
  • Experience with computerized queuing systems.
  • Experience proctoring tests.
  • Bilingual/multilingual skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt across different DMV locations.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers and determine the nature of their visit, directing them to the right service area.
  • Screen customer paperwork to check that required documents and information appear complete.
  • Manage customer flow through the DMV queuing system.
  • Help maintain an organized, efficient office environment.
  • Grade vision test results and enter passing results into the DMV computer system.
  • Assist customers at self-service DMV kiosks, including basic troubleshooting.
  • Take customer photos for driver's licenses and other DMV identification documents.
  • Proctor DMV examinations and monitor testing areas for procedure and security compliance.
  • Refer customers with complex questions to the appropriate DMV staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard customer information at all times.
  • Work cooperatively with DMV staff and other assigned personnel.
