The Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine is seeking highly qualified individuals for tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The ideal candidates will be physician-scientists with strong nuclear medicine-related clinical and research interests, particularly in molecular imaging and theranostics, and a proven commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary scholarship and leadership. The Division of Molecular Imaging & Therapeutics (MI&T) at UAB offers comprehensive clinical nuclear medicine services, including PET/CT, SPECT/CT, targeted radiotracer imaging, and radionuclide therapies, with a growing focus on theranostics and radiopharmaceutical therapy. The division is multidisciplinary, comprising clinical and research faculty, technologists, physicists, radiochemists, and administrative staff, and plays a key role in patient care within the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and collaborates with various other clinical services. The Division Director and Section Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership for the MI&T clinical enterprise, overseeing clinical operations, quality, faculty recruitment and development, programmatic growth, coordination with leadership, and resource stewardship. While active investigation is encouraged, personal research productivity is not a strict requirement, provided there is a demonstrated commitment to supporting faculty research. UAB Radiology boasts a rapidly expanding health system with advanced infrastructure for molecular imaging and therapeutics, including a cyclotron and state-of-the-art imaging equipment. Future plans include expanding theranostics programs, increasing clinical trial activity, and growing disease-focused molecular imaging services. Successful candidates will be committed to developing strong extramurally funded research programs, demonstrating excellence in trainee education, and contributing meaningfully to the University and profession. Innovative approaches to molecular imaging and theranostics are highly valued, with specific interests in radiopharmaceutical therapy, clinical theranostics trials, radiation biology, targeted radiotherapy, novel PET and SPECT tracers, AI-assisted molecular imaging, and oncologic or neurodegenerative disease applications. Candidates are expected to have a clear vision for nuclear medicine, a strong record of scholarly achievement, and a commitment to mentoring trainees. Establishing and expanding a robust, extramurally funded research program is crucial. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must be nationally recognized for research accomplishments; tenure-eligible candidates must demonstrate an outstanding vision for independent scholarship. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The department fosters strong collaborations with other UAB entities, including the School of Medicine, UAB Hospital, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Center for Advanced Research. UAB is a leading research university and academic health center known for its collaborative culture and significant contributions to education, healthcare, and research. Birmingham offers a vibrant metropolitan environment with affordability and a high quality of life, featuring a strong culinary scene, arts and culture, outdoor recreation, and beautiful surroundings.
