About The Position

Abbott is seeking an experienced transactional attorney to lead teams of in-house attorneys in acquisitions, divestitures, equity investments, and other significant transactions for all Abbott businesses. This role involves close collaboration with senior Abbott business leaders, members of Abbott’s Legal Division, the Corporate Licensing & Acquisitions organization, and broad cross-functional teams. The position can be located at Abbott’s headquarters in Abbott Park, Illinois, or Chicago, Illinois (Willis Tower).

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Strong academic background.
  • Appropriate licensure to practice law in Illinois (or ability to obtain).
  • 12+ years of experience in M&A in a top-tier law firm and/or large multinational corporation.
  • Proven ability to lead attorneys and/or paralegals.
  • Proven ability to perform successfully in cross-functional teams, with the ability to lead and mentor.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound commercial and legal judgment.
  • Ability to independently handle highly complex matters with minimal supervision.
  • Understanding of which issues to elevate to senior management and appropriate timing for doing so.
  • Excellent interpersonal, strategic thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Strong ethical center.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cross-border transactions is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Active involvement and supervision of outside counsel in all aspects of acquisitions, divestitures, and equity investments, including structuring transactions, performing due diligence, negotiating transactions, drafting agreements, and advising internal constituents.
  • Anticipating and identifying issues, developing and evaluating alternatives, and gaining stakeholder alignment for risk-balanced solutions.
  • Advising leadership on legal issues and collaborating with Abbott stakeholders, legal colleagues, and outside counsel to drive desired business outcomes.
  • Managing one or more lawyers and support staff.
